about

I was approached by novelist, Mark Boyter, to compose a song representing his newest book, Crescent Moon Over Laos. This suite was the result.

lyrics

crossing the Mekong at quarter to nine
the rusting river shows us no sign
of where to travel in this lush mountain green land
rice fields worked by prayerful hands

I take the stripe colored lot doi son to pakse
where the crumpled stones of the Kmher temple lay
stick house straw shanties over winnowed grain
where the past of a wind blown fire storm remain

no one here seems to know
though the timeline that is spent
travel by truck on singled lane dust filled roads
feeling content

crescent moon over laos

banana palms slap against teak wood wall
counting the numbered based headless Buddhas as they fall
woven blue thread stretches across a weaver's palms
young crimson orange monks await their alms

no one here seems to care
through the money tree that is bent
travel past the orange crimsoned robes
feeling content

the evening falls in a rich purple hue
drinking whiskey loa to the tune of Peggy Sue
the coffee strengthens my point of view
i"m not alone in what I do
